Black Widow Control in Table Grapes
At the annual meeting of the California Table Grape Commission, growers were addressed on the rare issue of black widow spiders hitchhiking in a cluster of grapes all the way to the supermarket. To further minimize anything like that taking place, UCCE Specialist Kent Daane discussed his research in obtaining better control of these spiders in the vineyard. Watch the video and read American Vineyard Magazine for more details.

"Unlabeled" is a presentation covering the challenges and successes of an emerging LA design studio in an era driven by imagery, where all work and life is so quickly dissected, documented, and categorized. Brian Wickersham is a Founding Partner of AUX Architecture, a Los Angeles design studio established in 2008 dedicated to the thorough investigation of functionality, spatial qualities, and materiality in the built environment. Brian leads the LA studio and has collaboratively evolved what was once a kitchen table pop-up focused on small-scale renovations into a firm with a national reach specializing in high-end residential, mixed-use, multifamily, workplace and hospitality projects. Brian is a process-oriented designer. His work relies equally on intuition, experience, pragmatism, serendipity, anarchy, research and collaboration. He is a licensed Architect in California, Nevada & Virginia, NCARB certified, and a LEED Accredited Professional. Prior to establishing AUX with Jeremy Fletcher, Brian was an award-winning Architect with Daly Genik Architects, Frank Gehry, and Graft.

The National for Tuesday March 6, 2018 - RCMP Review, Trump's Tariffs, Housing Crisis
A clarification about the first story in this newscast: One of the details in this report suggests that after first arresting Gerald Stanley, the RCMP released him from custody before taking a formal statement. We have since obtained new information that shows, while his statement was not taken until the day following his arrest, he was not released from custody. We also reported that there was no indication Stanley's clothing was seized. However, new information shows us that his clothing was in fact seized. We contacted the RCMP prior to our reporting and they declined our repeated requests to confirm or deny that information. Energy Benchmarking Help Centers: Case Studies of Successful City and Third Party Partnerships
Local jurisdictions that are responsible for managing a building benchmarking program or other related energy efficiency initiatives often find that providing adequate outreach and support services to end users is one of the most important, and potentially resource intensive, aspects of the program. Although some cities have served these needs by relying strictly on internal staff, others have chosen to work with an outside third party, to gain additional support and analytical capabilities. In some cases these solutions have evolved far beyond a simple "help line" to include other services such as notifying building owners, reviewing submissions for data quality, data cleansing and analysis, proactively following up with targeted building owners, referrals/coordination with utility programs, etc. Please view this webinar to hear how partnerships in three cities with existing benchmarking programs have chosen to meet some of these needs: 1. City of Seattle + Northwest Energy Efficiency Council 2. City of Chicago + Elevate Energy 3. New York City + Building Performance Lab, City University of New York During this webinar, each pair of presenters provide insights on how responsibilities have been divided up between the participating organizations, lessons learned through their experience, and potential future directions to maximize the impact of these programs while controlling costs.

UAF - 2015 - The Lost Alaskans
Retired Superior Court Judge Niesje Steinkruger highlights ongoing work to document the histories of Alaskans sent to Morningside Hospital through court records and other archived materials. Steinkruger has spent five years as a volunteer for the Morningside Project. Thousands of Alaskans were sent to Morningside between 1904 and the early 1960s because there were no facilities here to treat the mentally handicapped and those suffering other disabilities. After the hospital closed, many of these people were never heard from again. The hospital building burned and all records were lost. From UAF Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning

The Long Way Home / Heaven Is in the Sky / I Have Three Heads / Epitaph's Spoon River Anthology
Spoon River Anthology (1915), by Edgar Lee Masters, is a collection of short free-form poems that collectively describe the life of the fictional small town of Spoon River, named after the real Spoon River that ran near Masters' home town. The collection includes two hundred and twelve separate characters, all providing two-hundred forty-four accounts of their lives and losses. The poems were originally published in the magazine Reedy's Mirror. Each following poem is an epitaph of a dead citizen, delivered by the dead themselves. They speak about the sorts of things one might expect: some recite their histories and turning points, others make observations of life from the outside, and petty ones complain of the treatment of their graves, while few tell how they really died. Speaking without reason to lie or fear the consequences, they construct a picture of life in their town that is shorn of façades. The interplay of various villagers — e.g. a bright and successful man crediting his parents for all he's accomplished, and an old woman weeping because he is secretly her illegitimate child — forms a gripping, if not pretty, whole. The subject of afterlife receives only the occasional brief mention, and even those seem to be contradictory. The work features such characters as Tom Merritt, Amos Sibley, Carl Hamblin, Fiddler Jones and A.D. Blood. Many of the characters that make appearances in Spoon River Anthology were based on real people that Masters knew or heard of in the two towns in which he grew up, Petersburg and Lewistown, Illinois. Most notable is Ann Rutledge, regarded in local legend to be Abraham Lincoln's early love interest though there is no actual proof of such a relationship. Rutledge's grave can still be found in a Petersburg cemetery, and a tour of graveyards in both towns reveals most of the surnames that Masters applied to his characters. Other local legends assert that Masters' fictional portrayal of local residents, often in unflattering light, created a lot of embarrassment and aggravation in his hometown. This is offered as an explanation for why he chose not to settle down in Lewistown or Petersburg. Spoon River Anthology is often used in second year characterization work in the Meisner technique of actor training. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoon_River_Anthology
